OBEDIENCE CLASSES

we don't do them... but why not?

We love distractions here at Kim's K-9 Training Center.  We believe in training dogs to respond when you need them to.... in real-life situations like a strange dog approaching.  Or a kid blasting by on a skateboard.  Joggers. Crowds.  Noise.  Chaos.

We also firmly believe in making sure that your pet completely understands what we are asking him or her to do before we insist they do it in challenging situations.   We believe obedience classes to be counter productive for initial obedience training. It is our opinion that introducing foreign words and concepts in a class situation is equivalent to someone who doesn't understand basic math trying to learn calculus at the wedding reception of their best friend.  Sure, they could do it... but wouldn't it be much more effective to gain the knowledge of the concepts in a controlled environment first? It is very discouraging to set your dog up to fail... we have trained 100's of class drop outs whose only sin was that the dogs and owners were placed in over their head.

Once your dog "gets it" we encourage and insist that the same definitions of the commands hold true no matter what the dogs surroundings are... and because he has a good grasp on the concepts, the transitions go much smoother. We even offer classes for graduates to practice!  See the D.O.G. class below.

Obedience classes are different than Puppy Kindergarten class. Our Puppy Kindergartens classes very essence is designed to build up your dogs confidence,  temperament and social skills with a variety of people and other pups.  We strive for high energy in our Puppy Kindergarten classes for a reason; it is helpful for your pup at that stage of development.   We do not believe that is true in initial obedience training.

 PUPPY KINDERGARTEN CLASS

This is for puppies to start between the ages of roughly 12-18 weeks.  This program is designed to work on socialization, temperament training and a foundation of good manners.  It has long been proven effective in preventing  future instances of aggression, shyness and general bad manners.  It is a critical time period where the pups brain connections are being shaped.  We help you teach the pup from the start how to be the best dog possible.  Similar to a person learning a new language; the younger it is introduced, the faster and more fluent the person can become. The pup learns to control play biting, enjoy or at least tolerate being handled by anybody, how to wait patiently, to leave things, to have confidence in new situations, to let people take things from him,  how to ring a bell to go outside to potty, and the proper time and place for chewing, digging and barking.  We also introduce sit, down, stand and come here.

Note on Covid-19: While normally Puppy Kindergarten class is meant to have some truly organized chaos within the classroom and we love having whole families and children in class, as this is helpful for the puppies during their socialization period, right now we are restricting the class to two humans per puppy maximum until further notice. We will do everything in our power to help your whole family to be involved in starting out right with your new furry family member! Please contact our trainers directly with any specific questions regarding our current C-19 policies at this time.
